Here is the list of shows we are currently planning for Term 1 of next academic year:
-
The Fresher’s Plays
Every year, the Drama Soc’s first productions are reserved entirely for Freshers as a means of bringing people into the society and getting them involved… This year, we are staging 3 Shows as part of the Fresher’s Plays.
We have an adaptation of D.O.A (Dead Or Alive), a detective film about a man who discovers he has been poisoned and that he has a week to live… find a synopsis from the Internet Movie Database here. The play will be an adaptation of this 50’s Film Noir by the Director, second year student Phil Marzouk.
Alongside this, we will be staging an adaptation of Tristan and Yseult, the old Arthurian Legend, a tragic love story, which is, in this version, seen from the point of view of Whitehands, as the Emcee of the Club of the Unloved. This play will be directed by Milla Jackson.
Finally, the last of our Fresher’s Plays will be The Grouch, a modern day take on Molière’s Le Misanthrope by Ranjit Bolt. This quick-witted, upbeat and punchline filled comedy will be jointly directed by Frenecka Mumford and Annabel Sowemimo, our volunteering coordinator.
The Fresher’s Plays will be performed in the Fifth week of term, ie on Thursday 29th, Friday 30th and Saturday 31st of October. We will be having two plays performed per evening from 7:30pm and all three on the saturday afternoon for a matinée beginning at 2pm, at the UCLU Garage Theatre Workshop. Entry is £3, and each show lasts approximately 1 hour.
More information will be published closer the time.

4:48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane & The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh
Our next production of the year will be a double bill of 4:48 Psychosis directed by Ragnhild Dale, our Treasurer, with The Pillowman, directed by Sam Smullen.
4:48 Psychosis is a play about the breakdown of a mind. It is a monologue for several voices, all reflecting different aspects and conflicting thoughts, as well as interruptions from outsiders attempting to help, cure, alleviate or dumb down the mind itself. As the play progresses, the person becomes increasingly frustrated and comes close to the verge of giving up and taking her own life, as she sees no further reason to live. Scared of help, scared of medication, scared of dying, and scared of living, she is trapped in a state of neither alive nor dead, clear only in the moments when ‘sanity visits’, at 4.48 am.
In The Pillowman, a writer in a totalitarian state is interrogated about the grusome content of his short stories and their similarities to a number of child-murders that are happening in his town.
These shows will be performed in week 6 of term, ie Thursday 5th, Friday 6th and Saturday 7th of November in the The UCLU Garage Theatre Workshop. The shows begin at 7:30pm and will be in a double bill, ie played one after the other. Entry is £3.

Antigone by Sophocles – in association with the UCLU Hellenic Society
This exciting production will be Drama’s First collaboration with the UCLU Hellenic Society. The Drama Soc often co-produces palys with smaller societies which may otherwise have insufficient members, ressources or insider know-how to pull of a slick and successful production. Director Amalia Kontesi (Hellenic Soc) and Producer Nathania Wong (Drama Soc) will be recruiting members from both Drama and Hellenic Societies to perform Sophocle’s tragedy about Antigone, the daughter of the king of Thebes sentenced to death for burying her brother.
Antigone will be onstage in week 9 of term, ie on the 26th, 27th and 28th of November 2009 in the UCLU Garage Theatre Workshop. The show begins at 7:30 PM, and entry is charged at £3.
-
Cymbeline by William Shakespeare
Cymbeline is one of the less performed plays by Shakespeare, so don’t miss your chance to catch this production at the UCLU Garage Theatre Workshop. This will be our last Garage production of term 1, and promises to be a thrilling production. Directed and Produced by final year English students Kanika Clayton and Emily Morrison respectively, “Cymbeline” tells the story of a tragic romance, and deals with the themes of jealousy and innocence.
Don’t miss this, Drama’s last Garage play of the year. Week 11 of term (10th, 11th and 12th of December 09) at 7:30pm sharp. Entry is £3.
